Decks
The characteristics of SPS provide a range of benefits in the construction of ship decks. Huge lengths of welded stiffeners are rendered unnecessary.
Vehicle decks aboard car carriers or RoRo ferries, for example, are lighter, stiffer and more durable for equivalent axle weights and loadings.
The weight of steel decks of logistics craft engaged in the shipment of heavy plant can be significantly reduced by using SPS whilst simpler construction leads to improved space utilisation, a reduction in materials, savings in weight and greater cargo-carrying capacity. Cruise ship decks can be built of prefabricated plates, factory-finished with high-quality cladding and built-in noise and vibration damping and fire resistance.
SPS decks exhibit: • Fewer corrosion prone details • Greater stiffness and reduced weight • Better vibration damping and acoustic insulation • Built-in fire protection
